Structured Invention Tasks to Prepare Students for Future Learning: Means, Mechanisms, and Cognitive Processes

چکیده
Successful instruction should help students acquire robust knowledge and prepare them for future learning opportunities. However, we are yet to find a winning strategy for systematically achieving robust learning (Bransford & Schwartz, 2001). Accumulated evidence suggests that discovery learning does not help most students acquire the basic foundations, and direct instruction, on the other hand, often leads to a relatively rigid body of knowledge (c.f., Tobias & Duffy, 2009). Instructional technologies are in a similar pursuit of robust learning (Koedinger & Aleven, 2007). However, students working with discovery environments often do not receive adequate support and thus fail to achieve desired learning gains (De Jong & van Joolingen, 1998). Students working with intelligent tutoring systems receive appropriate support, but on tasks that may not prepare them enough to make sense of new situations. Recently, Schwartz and colleagues devised a hybrid method called Invention as Preparation for Learning (IPL; Schwartz & Martin, 2004). In IPL students attempt to develop novel mathematical methods prior to (and not instead of) receiving direct instruction. While Schwartz and Martin (2004) showed that IPL is successful in preparing students for future learning, questions regarding the mechanisms and scalability of IPL remain largely unanswered. This thesis focuses on understanding the sources of IPL's effectiveness, and using that to design technology that can scale up IPL. To address these issues, I conducted a series of classroom experiments to assess the effect of IPL on students' domain knowledge, motivation, and general invention skills, and to identify under what conditions and by what cognitive mechanisms IPL accelerates future learning; I contrasted different versions of IPL in order to identify its core components; and I created and evaluated the Invention Lab, a unique intelligent tutoring system for IPL. This thesis makes contributions to cognitive science by better understanding the mechanisms and effects of inventions in learning. It contributes to the learning sciences by conducting comprehensive evaluations of a novel pedagogy. And it contributes to the field of 2 -

Inventing to Prepare for Future Learning: The Hidden Efficiency of Encouraging Original Student Production in Statistics Instruction
Activities that promote student invention can appear inefficient, because students do not generate canonical solutions, and therefore the students may perform badly on standard assessments. Two studies on teaching descriptive statistics to 9th-grade students examined whether invention activities may prepare students to learn. Study 1 found that invention activities, when coupled with subsequent...

Background: Human beings use different approaches to learning. Thus the aim of this study is to explore the mechanisms of learning through the hidden curriculum in the perspective of baccalaureate undergraduate nursing students. Methods: This qualitative study, involving 24 baccalaureate undergraduate nursing students, was done by purposeful sampling strategies. The data were collected using se...
متن کاملOutcomes and Mechanisms of Transfer in Invention Activities
Invention activities are structured tasks in which students create mathematical methods that attempt to capture deep properties of data (e.g., variability), prior to receiving instruction on canonical methods (e.g., mean deviation). While experiments have demonstrated the learning benefits of invention activities, the mechanisms of transfer remain unknown. We address this question by evaluating...
متن کاملHelping Students Know ‘Further’ – Increasing the Flexibility of Students’ Knowledge Using Symbolic Invention Tasks
Invention as Preparation for Learning (IPL) is a teaching strategy in which students attempt to develop novel solutions prior to receiving instruction (Schwartz & Taylor, 2004). This method was previously shown to prepare students to learn independently from future learning opportunities that build upon the materials learned in class. We began unpacking the IPL process by identifying its compon...

This study examined the effects of cognitive task complexity increase on the complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) as well as the temporal distribution of the cognitive and metacognitive processes involved in computer-mediated L2 written production. To this end, the study employed a between-subjects experimental design with 85 EFL learners from a language learning institute in Iran. Participa...
